The NetMonkeys Manchester Security and Engineering team came together for an immersive, hands-on Network Workshop, designed to enhance technical expertise, reinforce cybersecurity awareness, and foster team collaboration. Led by Engineering Team Lead, Wes Parton, the session provided valuable learning experiences while offering a great opportunity for team bonding.
Diving into Network Theory and Hands-on Practice
The day kicked off with a comprehensive Network Workshop, where the team explored core network theories, key concepts, and real-world applications. From discussing the fundamental purposes of networks to troubleshooting complex configurations, the session was both insightful and practical. Engineers had the opportunity to work hands-on with firewalls and switches, gaining valuable experience in configuration and diagnostics.
As part of the workshop, the team also tackled a network refresh project, involving a complete re-racking of an existing network cabinet. This hands-on task reinforced best practices for structured cabling, device organisation, and maintenance efficiency—an essential skillset for delivering top-tier IT security and infrastructure support.
Mastering Cyber Incident Response
Following the network segment, the team delved into a critical topic: Cyber Incident Response. The session covered the essential processes, procedures, and team member roles involved in responding to cybersecurity threats.
One of the highlights of the workshop was an interactive tabletop exercise, where the team participated in a simulated cyber incident. This engaging activity required the team to analyze unfolding security threats, discuss possible response strategies, and collaboratively navigate the incident resolution process. This type of simulation is invaluable in preparing engineers to handle real-world cybersecurity challenges effectively and efficiently.
Putting Knowledge to the Test: The Interactive Quiz
To wrap up the educational portion of the day, the team participated in a lively quiz designed to reinforce key learnings from the sessions. The quiz tested participants on network fundamentals, cyber incident response, and best practices, ensuring that everyone left with a solid grasp of the day's takeaways.
A big congratulations to Jack, who emerged as the top scorer and walked away with a £15 Amazon voucher as a prize!
Beyond Learning: Team Lunch & Social Gathering
No NetMonkeys workshop is complete without great food and good company. The team enjoyed a well-deserved burger lunch, recharging after an intense morning of learning and problem-solving. To top off the day, the team headed out for some social beers and chicken wings in Manchester, celebrating a successful and productive internal security activity in true NetMonkeys fashion.
Coming Soon: Nottingham Edition
Given the success of the Manchester session, we’re excited to announce that we’ll be hosting the same workshop in Nottingham soon! This will provide another opportunity for our security and engineering teams to sharpen their skills, engage in hands-on exercises, and build stronger professional relationships.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to invest in our team’s growth, ensuring that NetMonkeys remains at the forefront of IT security and infrastructure excellence!
